Following directly on from SC2.1: Examining the impact of COVID-19 on research and the scientific community, this pop-up Networking Event will enable participants to share how COVID-19 has impacted their research or personally as scientists. This networking session won't build on SC2.1, but rather give participants the opportunity to discuss their own experiences and potential coping mechanisms with others.

This informal event is organized for people that would like to socialize and network after the NET42 EGU Pride event and further discuss activities and long term plans for LGBTQIA+ community and allies within EGU and in Academia. Please feel free to join :)

Attendees are invited to meet the members of the Outreach Committee. Join this drop-in-session and meet the committee members, learn of the projects and goals, and ask questions. Want to an interesting way to share your science? Do you want an engaging image to advertise your EGU presentation? Have an idea about how to combine Lego and science? Then come along to talk to EGU21 Artist In Residence Stacy Phillips, who can turn your abstract into a Lego scene! It could be a Lego remake of a fieldwork photo, Lego-you using lab equipment, or a representation of a paper figure using Lego pieces, anything goes! Pop in to this networking event and chat to Stacy about how she can Lego-fy your science.

Following the 'mind your head: your mental well-being in an academic career' short course, we will put into practice some of the skills we heard about mindfulness and meditation. In this relaxed and informal session, we will guide you through some seated meditation to help you handle the stresses of academia, conference attendance and a global pandemic.

Despite the difficult times, we cannot give up the social events associated with the EGU General Assembly. This year's Geomorphology Division networking event will take place online at lunch time, in the hour preceding the Division meeting. A Gather virtual environment will be freely accessible to everyone. There, you'll be able to interact with audio and video with your international colleagues and peers in pretty much the same way as you would do in a normal physical space. The nexus of machine learning and geosciences is a burgeoning one, with many new papers being published every month. Particularly, many early-career researchers are using ML and artificial intelligence in their research. At this informal networking event, we begin with a group discussion on past research and future opportunities at this scientific intersection. Breakout groups will then be set up to facilitate more focused discussions. The goal of the event is to foster new interdisciplinary and international collaborations. There will possibly be a white paper written as a longer-term output of the event.

τeκτoniκa is an up-coming community-led diamond open access (DOA) journal, which aims to publish high-quality research in structural geology and tectonics. It is a grass-roots community-driven initiative that relies on the involvement of Earth Scientists from around the globe. τeκτoniκa is part of an expanding movement within academia focused on breaking the barriers inherited from the pre-internet publishing era, to ensure free and open access to knowledge. We want to showcase and openly discuss how DOA journals in general (and Tektonika in particular) might shape the future of geoscience publishing.

Meet new and old peers and talk about ocean carbon science & other things, while sitting at the beach, by a campfire, or having a picnic! The event will take place on GatherTown and there will be options to connect via video chats in small break-out rooms (themed and open), text-based chats, notice boards for announcements and more! This “Find Funding” pop-up event aims to provide tips and suggestions to graduate students and early-career researchers in building a successful proposal. A successful proposal is not just about good ideas but a combination of many important things that need to be carefully curated. This pop-up event will therefore provide a great opportunity to talk directly with the successful Marie Curie fellows to learn from their experiences and suggestions in writing a ‘Great Proposal’.

Effectively visualizing data is crucial for the publication and outputs of geoscience research. Which tips and best practices from the visualization community can be applied to earth science graphics for public or academic audiences? I can discuss my perspective in doing research on visualization for seismic hazard (see https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/EGU21-8308.html, session on 27.4., 13:30 CET) and aftershock forecast maps (see https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/EGU21-8318.html, session on 30.4., 15:30 CET). My background is on color scales, classification schemes, and graph formats, specifically for showing uncertainty in spatial heat maps. Please bring your experiences and hard-earned lessons on these points and more!

Join us in this pilot initiative coordinated by the EGU to promote geoscience education in schools. The event takes you to Algarve (Portugal) to join Hélder Pereira and his school classroom together with Susana Custódio, a seismologist from the University of Lisbon. Using scientific data, the teacher and the scientist work together to guide the students in their quest for understanding the origin of the South American volcanic gaps. This session is conducted in Portuguese with live English translation, and is likely to be of interest to anyone interested in science education and outreach.

Humankind must make fundamental changes to maintain a habitable planet for future generations, but many of us have a difficult time determining what to do because we don’t have a clear goal. The purpose of this discussion is to begin to assemble a hopeful vision of what life could be like. What do we need to create that vision? What must we change most and how can we begin to change it? How can we coordinate our efforts to enhance effectiveness? We want to talk about the big picture, and we want to learn from your experience.

We would like to invite people interested in compound disasters, diaster risk assessments, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation (and in particular attendees of NH9.5, NH 10.1, and NH10.4) for a social video chat. The pop-up event will use Spatial Chat which allows participants to move through a virtual room and interact with people closer to them - as if they are in a real room.

Remember the good, old post-conference beer-in-hand chatting? We recreated a virtual rooftop bar where you will be able to chat and network, exactly as in real life! We want to bring together EGU scientists from the gas hydrate, permafrost, and broader cold seeps community. You will be asked to create your avatar and decide whether you want to keep your camera and microphone active or use the text chat and emotes to communicate. It’s going to be fun! I'm using thermal imaging to investigate Arctic sea ice characteristics and would be curious what other applications are out there, e.g., permafrost, planetary science or geothermal research. With a total of 4 Artists (not) in Residence serving at the conference this year we thought we would dedicate a relaxed discussion panel for all of them to share the work they have created for the event and chat about their experience with the artist residency.
