The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s intergovernmental space organisation, bringing together 23 Member States to develop and operate ambitious space missions and technologies. Two directorates will be represented: the Directorate of Science explores fundamental questions in astrophysics, heliophysics, and planetary science through world-leading space science missions. The Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration leads Europe’s participation in human spaceflight and robotic exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

The Collaborative Research Center "SFB 1759 Habitability as a fundamental planetary process: Towards a paradigm shift away from our perception of the uniqueness of Earth" at Freie Universität Berlin investigates habitability as a widespread phenomenon and a general fundamental physio-geo-chemical process set by the planet’s evolution. The study of planetary habitability is therefore oriented along planetary boundary conditions set by astronomy, physics, chemistry and geology, rather than Earth-specific biological evolution.
